Word on the street is that many of these motorcycle clubs enforce strict rules dictating who their members can date and even marry. In some cases, this restriction extends to old ladies, or wives of longtime members. It is no wonder that Angels devote more time on the streets than at residence, considering that they are a motorcycle club. According to some figures, participants ride an average of 20,000 kilometres each year. So, if you do not believe you will be able to keep up with this hard lifestyle, membership may not be right for you. You already know that the club has had some history with law enforcement.
Ask Amy: When they learn about my wife, women won’t go out with me
Violence is part of the language of the Hells Angels or any outlaw motorcycle club. It was in the low-buzz frequency I always thought I could hear when I was among them back in California. It wasn’t turned toward me then, but it was the same low, ominous buzz you hear if you get too close to a power line. We talked for hours, sharing our very different lives. He had grown up poor and the youngest of six in rural Oregon, and had been in the military and in a smaller motorcycle club before the Hells Angels. He was seven years older than me, but it seemed like more.
An Angel bearing a New York rocker (a curved patch generally signifying an Angel’s charter) won’t even slow down as I approach, curtly remarking, “I’m here to enjoy myself, not to talk to press.” My press pass is a leper’s bell around my neck. Glancing down, I realize what made the huge Angel actively avoid me. The motto “When we do right, nobody remembers. When we do wrong, nobody forgets” may be as anti-press as it is pro-Angel.

It’s doubtful many police officers would want to risk their reputation by becoming a Hells Angel, but in case there are any, we’ve got some bad news in store – they can’t. There are certain things a Hells Angels charter simply won’t accept, and a police uniform is one of them. Even if you never became a fully-fledged officer, if you took any steps to become one at all, there’s no chance you’ll ever get into the club. Child molesters and rapists are also banned, although for very different reasons. Most Hells Angels have regular lives, regular homes, and regular jobs, but you wouldn’t know it from the amount of time they spend on their bikes. But whereas some people like to ride alone, Angels like to ride as a group.
She would be working behind the bar and seemed to know everyone. I would fetch beers or soda, enjoying the easy familiarity everyone had with each other. But by midnight or one a.m., I was ready for bed, even though the party would still be going strong.
You have probably noticed how well-organized Angels members are if you have ever seen them riding along the street. The bikers travel in a certain sequence that denotes seniority. The president and road captain are normally in the head of the formation, while prospects are usually towards the rear. Hamment, Waterman says, was the money man, funding the first drug “cooks” from safe-crackings. Hill recruited key members of the gang to help him cook and distribute the drugs, including Roger Biddlestone, Raymond Hamment and John Paul Madden.
A year later, I was living in Denver and had found a job in Boulder, a nine-to-five editorial production gig that allowed me to do what I loved — teaching writing and doing some of my own — on the side. I was in many ways living the same sort of compartmentalized life as I had in the Bay Area — minus Angela, and of course, the Hells Angels. “I’ll miss you,” Scott said, the last time I saw him. “But maybe you need to go back to Colorado to find something you’re looking for. It might be right around the corner.” It sounded wise, but I knew what I was doing was retreating.
I chose to write my true story after I healed emotionally. I had to forgive everyone involved before I wrote it, or my book would not have been in the same voice it is now. If I had written my book in the first year or second year after I left, I would have still been trying to explain myself in a bitter tone as opposed to an understanding tone. I would have written my book for the ones who hurt me, instead of writing for our world.
The 51-year-old Bédard, who had only recently become a full-patch Hells Angels member, died in a road accident in New Brunswick. Peter Edwards, a Toronto Star reporter who covered the so-called Shedden massacre and has authored several books on organized crime, agrees. For just over half a decade, between the end of the Second Biker War and the end of aughts, the Hells had virtually no significant opposition. But police operations like Projects Amigo and Retire, targeting the Bandidos and the Outlaws respectively, crippled the Hells’ biker opposition.
Such a conviction, however, did not prevent Sonny Barger from using cocaine throughout his entire adult life. 1% – this symbol is worn not only by the Hells Angels but also by every Outlaw Motorcycle Club. Check It indicates belonging to the top biker class, which, according to these people, is 1% of the total number of bikers in the world. The Pagans MC is probably the least known club among the Big Four.
You’ve got no business judging what you have no clue about. There are no female members allowed in Hells Angel. This hard and fast regulation applies to all Angels, not just certain charters. Any women who join the organization as wives or girlfriends should be concerned with the level of devotion to the Hells Angels. Hill did his time and has kept out of trouble, first as a truck driver and later as a block owner up around Mildura. It is said that to stick it up the Hells Angels he sold his speed recipe to the head of the rival Black Uhlans, a bloke called John William Samuel Higgs who became Australia’s most prodigious drug manufacturer.
